Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for supporting analytical laboratory processes including technology, methodology, laboratory proficiency measurements, research, and scientific processes. This position will have routine contact with the company’s client base and will be the lead scientist in charge of managing and coordinating all aspects of the company’s special projects and research initiatives.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage and work with the Special Project Team to deliver high quality and timely research projects including:
Timely customer contact
Proposal design
Quoting
Data analysis and presentation
Scientific report writing
Excellent customer service skills and the ability to understand and resolve scientific issues, answer questions and gain customer confidence
Experienced and expert ability to write scientific and technical proposals, reports, articles and presentations
Interpret a wide variety of research methods for different food and non-food matrixes to develop projects for customers and internal methods.
Required to present complex scientific information in a clear, concise format understood by a variety of audiences
Compile data in various analytical formats
Interpret data and present findings with appropriate documentation, references, and supporting material to the food and other associated industries
Maintain a high degree of technical competence by reading scientific journals, attending professional workshops, and being aware of food and associated industries regulations, issues and trends
Identify critical needs for special projects requested by customers
Coordinate the design and implementation of proficiency programs within the laboratory network
Identify and evaluate new technology to ensure the company offers the latest testing to its customer base
Directs special research projects
Coordinate and prepare scientific reports and technical articles
Supervise special projects as assigned to include training of technicians on protocols and research assignments
Facilitates professional meetings and presentations
Work on developing proficient and manageable programs for new business resulting in company growth and profitability
Participate in developing budget for projects
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has supervisory responsibilities. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Minimum of five years industrial food safety and quality assurance experience
Ph.D. in Microbiology or Food Science required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following:
Language Skills
Requires the ability to effectively communicate verbally and prepare written technical and scientific proposals for customers. Requires the ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence for groups of customers and employees of the organization. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of LIMS and Microsoft Office Products software.
