I specialize in adults and gifted students. I teach classical or "jazz," as well as composition. Jazz theory includes ALL pop music, from Americana to fusion. Don't worry! You will still learn to hold your wrists correctly, or correct your technique if advanced.
With two music degrees and 25 years performing, I've taught privately for 20+ years, and college music courses for over 10.
Most students learn scales and notated pieces. Beginners use "method" pieces with numbered fingerings. Easy to work through, students usually progress to easy Bach. Baroque music is correct played slowly in spite of fast recorded tempos. You play the classics early on.
Many students work with chord charts. The blues scale and progression are the basics for chord reading. Advanced students improvise modally, a valuable skill in jazz, rock, etc. As they progress, they learn chords built from fourths, the so-called "McCoy Tyner style."
Traditional jazz uses "ii-V-I" theory, important for any non-classical music. It allows you to master ALL chord types. Diminished harmony takes ii-V-I a step further, with multiple substitutions for each chord function. Few instructors know it or can use it correctly.
Guidelines are not rigid. Musicians can study specific areas of technique, theory, or classical. For adults, lessons need not be weekly.
Keyboards and synthesizers are fine for beginners and theory students. Parents should accompany young children.
Most students learn keyboards (piano) and theory. To teach keyboard technique, yoga-like postural work is included. I coach "rock band" instruments (drums, bass, guitar, blues "harp," vocals). My time in a Renaissance choir inspires my vocal coaching and modal instruction.
I have performed with internationally and locally recognized artists. Names can be provided as well as clips. I accept children as students.
