I specialize in adults and gifted students, teaching classical or jazz, as well as composition. Jazz theory includes blues to bluegrass, ALL pop music. Theory aside, students still learn to hold their wrists correctly. With two music degrees and 25 years of performance experience, I've taught for 20+ years, college music for over 10.
Most students learn scales and notated pieces, fast-tracking with numbered piano methods. Students progress quickly to easy Bach and other classic works. Baroque music is musically correct played slowly in spite of fast tempos classical players use. Young students and adults alike experience great music while they learn.
Some adults learn from chord charts. The blues scale and progression are basic to chord reading and playing. Advanced students improvise with modes, not just major or minor. Some do ii-V-I jazz theory. Diminished harmony is an advanced favorite with few instructors able to teach this method of re-harmonizing jazz.
For adult students, lessons need not be weekly. Guidelines are not rigid. Musicians often study for specific areas in technique or advanced theory. Keyboards and synthesizers are fine for beginners or those whose primary interest is theory.
I mostly teach keyboards (piano) and theory. While teaching keyboard technique, postural work like yoga is incorporated. All "rock band" instruments are coached (drums bass, guitar, blues harmonica, and vocals). My stint in a Renaissance choir empowers my vocal coaching and modal lessons.
